GRAFFITI VERSUS ADVERTISING IN NYC ART SHOW
A unique art show exploring the many benefits of graffiti, both the legal and illegal kinds, is opening on January 24th at The Lott Gallery of DriveIn24 and running through February 21st. The exhibit’s theme is “Writers Strike” and it reveals in stark relief what
The show will display all “illegal” work alongside and in comparison to blank walls, unadorned objects, intrusive advertisements and the boring paraphernalia of urban life - leaving the viewer to decide the value of the often persecuted art.
The viewers will be as varied as the display, as
Participating in the show are infamous graffiti artists such as COPE2, Terrible TKID170, TRACY168, CAP and the entire All City Crew, as well as legendary street artists including DarkClouds, Michael De Feo, ElbowToe and Gaia.
Show organizer BOMBIN’ Magazine, an edgy new publication quickly becoming a strong voice for street culture, believes the exhibit will help expose the true value of graffiti. “
“Yet, still they are forced to practice their art in secret, hiding from overzealous police and a legal system that punishes their democracy, seeks to handcuff their art, stifles their creativity and silences their voice.”
Writers Strike will graphically show how graffiti helps counter the overbearing messages of billboards, signs and other invasive marketing techniques. The show’s organizers promise that viewers will walk away asking graffiti artists, “what would we do without you?”

Fuel for Truth, a small but rapidly growing
After being exposed to their unorthodox outreach methods and observing what seemed to be spectacular results, Luntz decided to donate his time and measure exactly what impact the constantly innovating Fuel for Truth was having on the community. The results went beyond even Luntz’s educated expectations.
Dr. Luntz’s first conclusion is obvious to anyone who shows up at a Fuel for Truth event after having experience with other pro-Israel efforts – these are not the same people.
Much of the advocacy that is done on behalf of Israel seems to be preaching to the kippah wearing choir, but according to Luntz an astounding 39% of Fuel for Truth members were “not active at all” in Jewish or pro-Israeli causes in college and 71% of those who attend Fuel for Truth events are not regular synagogue goers. Fuel for Truth is reaching those considered unreachable and turning them into passionate supporters of
“You have engaged new people in new says,” says Luntz in his report. “In fact, I doubt if any Jewish or pro-Israel organization can boast so many new ‘converts’ to the effort.”
Talking with one tattoo covered Fuel for Truth volunteer who looked more in place in a rap video than a synagogue, I found myself reminded of an old Jewish joke and kept thinking, “Funny, you don’t look like an Israel advocate.”
But according to Fuel for Truth co-founder and Chairman Jonathan Loew, that is exactly the power of the organization.
And Frank Luntz’s survey backs up this enthusiasm with hard data. The fact is that Fuel for Truth is not only bringing in people who look different than those who normally advocate on behalf of Israel, Fuel for Truth is actually changing the hearts and minds of a generation largely disconnected from or even hostile to the cause.
After participating in Fuel for Truth events at New York City night clubs or on a college campus, results from those polled indicated a remarkable 53% increase in being “much more likely” to speak up on behalf of Israel.
Not only that, but Luntz found a profound effect among Fuel for Truth’s members totally contrary to the behavior of most socially careful 20-somethings.
“You are increasing the average time your members spend talking about
And Fuel for Truth is having another almost unheard of impact on the 18-34 year-old group that comprises the majority of their membership – members are putting their money where their mouth is.
Luntz, who has been part of political fund-raising efforts and knows how difficult it is to get people in their mid to late 20s to donate, says that what Fuel for Truth has accomplished in that area is absolutely remarkable. 34% of Fuel for Truth members donate more than $500 a year where prior to their involvement fully 55% of them gave less than $100 to Jewish or Israeli causes.
“You organization is creating donors at a very young age,” says Luntz, “and that is going to benefit the entire community for decades to come.”
But perhaps the biggest impact Fuel for Truth is having is creating friends of
The founders of Fuel for Truth were not religious Jews or political activists, but some of NYC’s top club promoters, up-and-coming business executives, and rising stars within the Entertainment Industry. Everything changed when they lost several friends on 9/11. Now they have dedicated all their considerable skills to promoting the truth about
Perhaps that is the secret to Fuel for Truth’s success – only outsiders can bring outsiders in. Fuel for Truth is creating a small but growing revolution in Israel Advocacy, their members are mostly not religious, not just Jewish, and in their own words “far more cool.”
The feisty non-profit may be proving that what Israel needs to fight the negative propaganda machine of her enemies is not giant organizations with deep pockets and political power, but small, nimble, passionate grass-roots movements like Fuel for Truth.
It makes a certain sense given the country being defended –
